Background:Lamisil (terbinafine) is a first-generation antifungal agent that has a narrow spectrum of activity. To date, its efficacy against trichomoniasis is not fully established and is likely due to the selective action of terbinafine (Lamisil) against the pathogenic microorganisms. This study investigates the safety and efficacy of terbinafine terbinafine by measuring plasma concentration of terbinafine in the presence of a low concentration of fungal cells in patients with fungal infection.
Methods:Patients with a clinical diagnosis of trichomoniasis, as defined by a positive culture result for Candida and a negative culture result for Candida, and a positive clinical history were included in the study. Patient information was gathered by a physician who performed a standardized clinical examination. The study included all patients who were receiving terbinafine therapy, and patients were followed up for a period of 7 days after treatment. At the end of treatment, the patient’s clinical symptoms (skin examination and urination) and clinical laboratory results (CBC, urine cultures) were monitored. Serum concentration of terbinafine was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography and its concentrations were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
Results:The patients with a positive culture result for Candida and a negative culture result for Candida were significantly more likely to experience a recurrence of the infection after therapy.
Conclusion:Lamisil is a first-generation antifungal agent with a broad spectrum of activity that is active against a broad spectrum of bacterial species. The efficacy of terbinafine in treating trichomoniasis is not confirmed.

After completing the study, the patients were assessed for clinical signs, urine cultures, and the presence of Candida (nausea, vomiting, and fatigue) by a standardized laboratory evaluation. A total of 15 patients were enrolled and were monitored for a total of 21 cycles of treatment. The mean number of patients with a positive culture result for Candida was 3.9 and the mean number of patients with a negative culture result was 7.7. The mean clinical signs were positive for Candida (nausea, vomiting, and fatigue) and the mean number of patients with a positive clinical history was 2.9 and 4.0, respectively. The mean number of patients with a positive clinical history was 2.2 and 3.0, respectively. The mean number of patients with a negative clinical history was 2.3 and 4.0, respectively. At the end of the study, patients were switched to a different drug, terbinafine 250 mg once daily.
